A bit over 17 years between posts. Interestingly I still have and use my 970. Tires are swapped every spring and fall.

Just to add to the snow capabilities of the 19.5L x 24 Firestone Turf and Fields, although they work this year I changed over to the 13.6 x 28 ( in my original post I mistakenly listed them as 13.6 x 24, they are 28's, sorry). In snow a R1 is superior, why handycap yourself.

I like to look at it from a different slant, your math is ok, I just like to view it the other way around. The important thing to determine is if the front SLR is within spec. I will use your SLR of 21.5 (my JD literature lists the SLR on this one at 22.67) for the rear 13.6 x 24 and divide that by 1.691 = 12.71 inches. if you use the recommended guidelines of up to + 5%
(12.71 x 1.05 = 13.35) your front tires should have a SLR of 12.75 > 13.35. Just as your math points out your fronts are a bit big for your rears. The 970 usually came stock with a 12.4 x 28 in the rear and the 7 x 16 up front. If you had a 12.4 x 28 in the rear with a rated SLR of 23.6 your front tires would have to be between 13.95 and 14.65 inches, incidentally on the stock rims my John Deere specs rate the 7 x 16 as having a SLR of 14.25. My factory specs list the 13.6 x 24 as an option and they list this combo as being 5.9 % overdriven in the front. If it were my tractor I would do either one of the following:

1: use the combo, it is very close to being within spec, don't rely on the rated SLR, measure it and play around with tire pressure. the main thing is that the front turns faster than the rear but not so fast as to cause the MFWD to engage and disengage with allot of effort.

or

2: change the rear tires to 14.9 x 24, cheap and available size and it brings the ratio into the ideal range and gives you a wider tire. I actually tried this combo and the traction was improved over the stock 12.4 x 28, they have the same SLR.

By the way I really prefer #2 and 14.9 x 24 are a take offs on the rear of big JD combines and should be cheap.

I contacted my dealer and JD online and they supplied me with 7 pages of figures and explanations on this very subject, some of it was straight from Yanmar (dimensions in metric)

one has to be carefull, sometimes free is too much to pay.
could be a real liability looking for heap of money.
once had a friend give me a JD sled. spent at least $1000 in repairs and
was able to sell it for $500. i then went out and bought a new sled.
Sometimes paying premium for minty stuff is worth it, then again sometimes you win
the lotto.......................

i have a 970 and i put a 7 foot farmking finishing mower on it. the power is adequate and i mow in 4 th gear. oh by the way the 950 has a front/rear ratio of 1.750:1 and the 970 is 1.691:1 but other than the difference in tire sizes they are very similiar.

i have a 970 that i am using for the third year. i like the tractor, works good but there are a few things that detract from its versatility. one is that the split in speeds between ranges is a bit too wide, the other is that being a compact it suffers from lack of traction without proper tires. traction can be improved with ballast or wider tires. i mow so i opted for the wider tires. i went aftermarket with 19.5L x 24 firestone turf and field, seems to be the ticket. the 990 is a 970 with more hp. although i have seldon been short of power. i run a 7 foot finishing mower in 4 th gear and it works like a charm. before that i ran a 5 foot brush cutter without any power shortage or problems.
if you do loader work shifting can become a chore.

the 84 inch farmking with 3 blades will mow in the rain. it has some rather unique baffles that seem to keep the underside very clean. i have owned a few mowers that take longer to clean than one spends mowing. the farmking is not one of them.

note the correction factor would be added if you read my reply literaly.

ie: a; measure your rear static loaded radius.
b; divide this # by 1.593.
c; multiply this by 1.01 to get the minimum
static loaded radius of front tire.
d; multiply this by 1.05 to get the maximum
static loaded radius of front tire.

any tire whose static loaded radius falls within this range is safe to use and will not damage parts. air presure comes into play. i taped a nail to a carpenters level and measured from this point to ground.

notice you said 30 acres, you need more tractor than a 750. most equipment is designed for 40HP and with 30 acres you should try to get as close to that as possible. also lets you borrow equipment from your neighbours, etc.

the only point that i would like to add is that with my 970 jd i traded up in tire size after a year. if you buy a tractor it can be ordered with different sized tires, don't go for the cheap deal, horsepower without traction aint worth !@#$. i now have the same tires on my 970 that came on the 1070 and it makes a world of a difference, 13.6 - 28 R1 and 8 - 16 R1. i have never owned a Kub but with the green dealer only 15 miles away and having gone to school with most of the people that work there and resale value etc the choice was biased towards the deere. also not having live pto is not a good thing, i don't know about you but the old tractors are best viewed in parades. i did have an ihc B250 with a rotary mower that scared me more than once with the mower flywheeling me to with inches of the promised land, but thats another story. make a list of musts, needs and wants, see who the winner is.

sounds to me like he did a funny with the tire sizes too. my info from jd indicates a 1050 came in 2 configurations, one with 27/8.50-15 on front with a 44/18.0-20 on the rear (turfs) or 7-16 R1 front and 13.6-28 R1 on the rear. if you have MFWD mixing the two would cause a problem. the MFWD ratio of a 1050 is 1.800. therefore the loaded radius of the front multiplied by 1.800 should be 1% to 5% more than the loaded radius of the rear, ( the front should run 1 to 5 % faster than the rear. i still have not decided which direction to go as an R4 may be a better compromize for me ???? either way my rears would work for you but not with the 8-16. email me in app a month, by the way i live in manitoba canada, we may not be neighbours.
